Forrabury History

The presence of this beautiful Norman font, indicates that there has been a church on the current site for well over 900 years

1169 The earliest documentary evidence records that Forrabury Church was 'gifted' to Hartland Abbey

1308 The first Rector was recorded

1520  The present porch was added with its roof of huge granite slabs

1760  The accepted date for the building of the tower

1842  Roof almost blown away by gale known locally as 'The Jessie Logan Gale". Repairs cost £46.2s.11p

1847  Vestry minutes record that 'the inhabitants are inconvenienced for the want of sittings in the church and enlargement of the building would be desirable for their accommodation.'

1867  Apart from the tower, the south side of the building and the porch, Forrabury was rebuilt at a cost of £320.00

Many old medieval oak benches removed and sold, but some remain, forming the pulpit, credence table and the 5 altar panels seen here.

1911  Chancel flooring, panelling, altar rails and screen installed

1914  Present organ installed

2004  Extensive restoration of tower at a cost of over £50,000 and today Forrabury Church remains at the very heart of our community
